Spiritual Anorexia and Bulimia

Welcome Back! Be sure to leave me a message as I would love to hear from you.

anex1Anorexia and bulimiaare not just physical problems. Our spiritual lives can be full of anorexia and bulimia. What a concept, to think that spiritually we can have malnutrition. You see anorexia is a lack, almost  an aversion to nutrition, be it food for the physical body or food for the spirit of man.

Isn’t this a horrible picture?   This is an outward visible sign of malnutrition. We can look the same hollow way on the inside as well. Anorexia and bulimia cause the same ugliness inside us as you see here.  Not a pretty picture.

Jesus says in Matthew 4:4 “man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”

Listen I have b..een both spiritually anorexic and bulimic in my life. When I was young I had a spiritual lack of nutrition, which was food to my spirit. I was ignorant of my lack. The devil is really good and clever in spreading spiritual malnutrition.
Do you find you have an aversion to reading the living and active word of God?  Do you avoid any relationship with churches and known christian men and women?  Ask yourself WHY?.    Are you anorexic or bulimic, spiritually that is?  It can come and go, so we need to always guard our hearts and minds.

Or you could be a christian who is lukewarm or one who is “doing” all the right things in the church and community. Yet how often do you spend time in the word of God?

No I don’t mean just praying.

That is a one way relationship and conversation with God.  To truly be getting our daily dose of vitamins and minerals for the spirit we need to read the Word of God and than meditate on it. Think on what you read. Mull it over, ask the Lord to reveal what he means.

Bulimia! We all know bulimia is an illness that is compulsive and reoccurring. It is self induced and can afflict anyone. Spiritually I would say that bulimia is very prevalant in our society. We take in the life giving word of God on a consistent basis than, when the chips are down we purge.

You ask, ” how is that?”   Confused?  Let me explain.    Yes we purge our knowledge of God’s ways and don’t apply it to our lives.

Peer pressure at any age is a common cause of tossing off the values and virtues we learn from the bible.  Simple obedience is what God calls us to, yet how many times have we purged the word of God and followed the enemy down the wrong path.   Oh it may not be illegal to the world’s law, but what about God’s law?   Spiritually, bulimia is as rampant as anorexia.

We are to be doers of the word not merely hearers who delude themselves.  (James 1:22)

Read the word of God, the Bible.  Apply the Life giving word to your spirit. Cast off anorexia and bulimia.

Than mediate on it. Reason and think about the scriptures you read.  You are in this for the long haul so don’t try to do a marathon of reading. Pick a few verses per day. Do some research, find someone to have conversation with concerning the scriptures. Resist the state of being in spiritual anorexia or bulimia.

That is the prescription for healing of spiritual anorexia and bulimia that will lead you down a pathway to ultimate health and wholeness.
